I've finally made it to First Division (first time ever). Here's a SS Razz

It took me 8 Playing Years (Going into 9th). I stayed in 8th Division and 4th Division extra year (Got Second both times). I'm playing Game Mode B on Normal Difficulty.

Going to take me a few years probaly to dethrone The Daelygn (hopefully I can even stay in First, last season lost to Mitorah who barely got 2nd to last (at the very end won 2 games and stayed there).

Hows everyone else doing? What Division you in? Smile

Congratulations. It seems you are the first one to achieve that Wink

I am playing game mode A on normal difficulty. I am now first in division 5 and wil most likely enter div. 4. I won 2 small cups, but later on I had some hard fights against higher level clans. I passed all the divisions in a "perfect" manner, meaning I spend only a year in each. The tacticts I used were to recruit a gearless mountain troll for a year. I could beat everyone with him, and that way I have earned enough cash to offer a membership to a knight. Right now I have two elves, a knight and a mino. Elves rules, I can take out most of enemy units with stong longbows, and cast some usefull spells to my melee combatants. If there is a fight against good team, some one battle contracts can be prove very nice Smile

Another forum member (Fandango?) got to division I earlier on actually. ;P
I guess it'll be harder even on normal difficulty after the bows are rebalanced.

I got in 1st div. too. I have some really heavy equiped elves with missile weapons (also can cast "combat eye"), and a druid which supports with "bless" spell. They can kill most units in a single shot. My Mino is there just in case. Although I don't know if I can beat my strongest enemy The Daeglyn - they have a lots of units and lots of spellcasters - woosh...

Hi there,

i already made it to first division another time, but then I got frustrated I could not beat the top teams. So I started over with new tactics.
I am currently in 2nd division and just beat the #1 from 1st division in the Cup!

Here is the setup:
I only use magic and range weapons, as i found melee persons to be a waste.
No or only little armor ( up to berserker) as good range weapons are a better investment.

The the line-up:
6 archers: all specialising in long bows, focussing on long range rather than damage. Only one of them has the best long bow, but I must say it is really worth the money. In battle, these are to take out enemy archers and mages.

4 rogues: all specialising in cross bows, for killing off melee onrushing mountain trolls and giants if they come too close. Currently all carrying Legendary CrossBows, most damage and range for your buck, and actually quite affordable.

2 barbarians: left over from earlier times. As they are not too stupid, they actually learnt how to use a longbow!

2 witches: I keep them behind the lines, and they only use 'break armor' in order to make the killing by archers easier.

4 arch mages: specialising in magical missile (longest range) and break armor. Also all have magical punch now, this ultra-long-range/low damage spell is really handy if you want to kill enemy bowmen that cary the best longbow, as that bow has the same range and is a real mage-killer.

that's it... I hope to beat the game soon now!

I'm in Div. 2 now... I'll be in 1st Division next year. I came in second in Division 8 my first year and haven't lost a regular season game since... I've had 2 seasons where I didn't take a single casualty all year. I've also won 2 small cups and my first Cup of Glory last year.

My core players are:

A minotaur with 20+ strength, top armor, and a top two handed sword. I'm developing his melee fighting skills. I've seen him hit people for over 100 points of damage!

2 Black Knights who are good, but aren't quite as impressive.

2 Dwarves. I'm training them purely in shield blocking and melee blocking skills. My plan is to push those guys in front of my troops... they'll take all the arrow fire while my other melee types push up behind them and get into closing distance.

* It's my theory that a charge by melee types, led by a couple of tough guys with top shield blocking skills and top equipment can overcome archers... we'll see. Cool

I also have 1 mage, 1 priest. 2 UBER elf archers with archery abilities in the 90's, and 2 lesser archers. These guys wear minimal armor if any... it would be a waste of money. If they're getting shot or swung at, then I've either not positioned them properly or I'm gonna lose anyway.

I also keep a pack of guys on retainer, people with 5 battle contracts who I only use against top teams in cup competition. They are:

A couple more mediocre mage types, since they don't need equipment to be useful and I can just throw them out there.

* I use my mages to cast magic missile or magic punch on people who are nearly dead, to finish them off. That's about all I use them for. They don't do enough damage at long range for too much else, and if I bring them close enough to use the mid range spells, somebody is going to shoot them.

5 cannon fodder goblins, who are just around to get shot to bits for 2-3 rounds while I reduce the enemy archer population a bit.

Hi Paul,

Did your melee-strategy work out for you?
melee guys are trying to overcome my archers all the time by charging, while wearing the best armours available, but they could not touch me so far, I suppose you will probably need 3-4 times more melee guys than there are archers to overcome, that is if they do not have any bodyguards standing around.

The archers are too powerfull in my opinion, I think archers should not be able to pull more than 2-3 volleys before the charging melee guys reach them. Anyway, there have been discussions about that in another thread already
I am thinking about making a mod with bow ranges diminsished severely.

As it turns out, not long after I posted that my saved game got corrupted... it was my own fault though. It was my first attempt at maknig a mod, and I should really have used a new game to do that. Sad

So I've just started out from scratch again. I have tried setting up a mod which pretty much doubles the speed of all of the melee guys, and lowers the starting distance between the two groups. That makes for a lot more melee... still needs to be tweaked tho. To compensate for the added speed, I've weakened warriors in every skill that they don't use, and have them only be good with one or two types of weapons - otherwise they get too expensive.

I still think that my melee strategy was a good one. Although, if I had to do it again I wouldn't have used dwarves as my lead blockers because they are too slow. 3-5 squares a round is worthless... they're like fire hydrants Sad

I've never had a warrior yet that had top shield and melee blocking skills, though. From what I've seen I would tend to think that a couple of guys like that would be nearly impossible to bring down.

The problem with the AI is that they don't send their guys at you all at once. Usually they send their archers out in front with a couple of spellcasters, who get shot to bits while their melee guys stand in the background and charge at the end. Now, if you had to pick between firing at the closing warriors or the archers who were firing at you, things might be a bit harder.
